Getting to experience the outdoors and engaging in physical activity is one of the best ways to promote a healthy lifestyle. A good way to handle both of these activities is through the sport of kayaking. And here at Yak Shack, we provide guided tours and rentals that allow you to explore the mangroves and other areas of Florida and get up close and personal with nature. If you’re new to the world of kayaking, you probably have a lot of questions about the activity. One of the most frequently asked questions is what someone should wear on a kayaking expedition. Well, we’re here to answer that inquiry.
Staying Dry & Comfortable
First and foremost, if you’re new to kayaking and haven’t gotten your sea legs yet, dressing dry and comfortable is of the utmost importance. Aside from having a fully functional life preserver, you’ll also want light-fitting clothing that can dry quickly and won’t restrict your movements. Your body is going to be engaging throughout your trip, so you want something like nylon. Florida can get rather warm, so lightweight materials should always be used.
Headgear & Shoes
Because you’re going to be outside and under the sun, it’s important to bring adequate protection. Remember to apply plenty of sunscreens, wear a hat and sunglasses, and store any valuables you might have with you in a small water-proof bag. When it comes to footwear, you’ll want to wear something waterproof, such as water shoes or maybe some light sandals. It’s important to remember that you’ll need outerwear that allows for easy movement and won’t weigh you down in case your kayak turns over.
What NOT to Wear
Of course, there are some clothing choices that you’ll want to stay away from while you’re kayaking. Heavy materials such as denim and cotton don’t breath particularly well and can restrict the necessary movements that you’ll need for navigating your kayak. Heavy footwear such as tennis shoes and boots can hinder your swimming ability, so they’re best avoided as well. You’ll want to dress how you would for a casual beach trip, and you should always think of safety and light movement when planning what you’re going to wear.
