Top Safety Tips from Your Friends at Yak Shack Watersports

  1. Beware Higher Winds – Obviously, no one should kayak during a storm, but it’s also important for beginners to exercise greater caution especially. Once the winds exceed about 10 mph, it’s better to choose a different day for kayaking (or take a tour with someone more experienced).
  2. Pay Attention to Water Temps – If the water dips below 65 degrees F, then you should consider a wetsuit. Fortunately, this is less of a problem in Florida, but it’s important not to kayak in colder waters without proper precautions. Also, talk to your kayaking instructor about what to do if you’re ever accidentally submerged in colder water.
  3. Equip Appropriate Kayaking Gear – The most important component is a personal flotation device (PFD). You should also have a paddle float, first aid materials, and at least one type of distress signal.
  4. Identify Terrain/Water Hazards – You always want to anticipate where the hidden rocks and tree roots lay. In ocean environments, pay attention to tide cycles and avoid rip tides at all costs.
  5. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work – It’s much safer to kayak in tandem, or, better yet, with a team of experienced folks.
  6. Finish Before Sundown – This is not a nighttime activity. If for no other reason, it could become easier to collide with other watercraft (including larger ones) because of reduced visibility.
  7. Carry Enough Water – Like any other form of exercise, it’s essential to stay hydrated. Don’t drink alcohol while kayaking, either.
  8. Talk to Us About Proper Kayaking Equipment – We can help you select the best kayaks, paddles, and accessories, which are vital for keeping you safe and sound. Durable materials are not only easier to operate, they run a much lower risk of capsizing or succumbing to dangerous water conditions.
